Stimulants for Attention & Focus:
Although the first go to in school for decades, has been big pharma and stimulants, they don’t work for many people.
Many fear side effects such as loss of appetite, sleep disturbance, and personality change. Many fear dependency, –or just don’t want to introduce chemicals into the brain and body.
For some, they are simply the ‘wrong’ choice!
Did You Know?
Anxiety is also often the culprit or ‘cause’ of poor focus and poor performance, and…
Stress contributes greatly to bad memory!
Discovery Days: In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s working educational difficulties and behavioural issues of children, Dr. Mari Swingle, (then Master Mari 😉 as in MA) found that for many of her young clients, focus itself (under-arousal or distraction) was not the main issue, affecting the ability to learn. It was over-arousal and over-focus. It was anxiety!
For these select children, adolescents and youth, stimulants (e.g., methylphenidate such as Ritalin and the larger pharma family) were disastrous! Treatments designed to stimulate the brain were equally not right. No wonder they did not want to be on them! … they were not working.
Dr. Mari Swingle took it upon herself to explore what was then a totally innovative concept involving quieting the brain for focus, not stimulating it! Carefully mapping the brain, using quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) she confirmed a very specific region in the brain, governing stress, was thwarting the ability to learn, retain learning, and ‘show’ learning under pressure. She also found negative pairing –associating ‘stress’ with ‘success’ –a profile common in female high school students and 1st and 2nd year university students.
Now, 25 years later at SwingleClinc we have exact profiling for the very young through elder. When we look through all lenses, there are no less than 14 markers or EEG brainwave signatures associated with Focus complaints. Through the SwingleSonic NeuroDelve APP, we now have multiple settings to address them all!
