Our History

A Strong Record of Research and Practice

The Swingle Clinic has long been a leader in the research and development of products for neurophysiological healthcare.

Prior to the founding of the Swingle Clinic in 1997/98, Dr. Paul Swingle (then at the University of Ottawa and Mclean’s Hospital/Harvard University, Boston) had been diligently studying how imperceptible sound (then called subliminal sound) affected brain states.

With the launch of the Swingle Clinic and our adjunct research & development branch, his groundbreaking findings led to a product line called SoundHealth Products. SoundHealth Products were embraced internationally by Bio and Neuro therapists, psychologists, and traditional counsellors to improve their work with various mental health conditions. These included depression, attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity problems, anxiety, sleep problems, PTSD, phobia and addiction disorders.

Throughout the 1990’s and early 2000’s, SoundHealth Products, were the first, and only, clinically proven, brain influencing harmonic series. With our low sound pressure psychoactive acoustics, then and now, we remain lightyears ahead of relaxing music and nature sounds for calming, white noise for blocking, and beats for focus and alignment. Very little movement has been made, leaving the field ‘stuck’ recircling and reviving; including variants of traditional applications including drum circle patterns, chants and religious gongs.

Before Dr. Swingle Sr’s breakthrough, the potential for complex, layered, subthreshold, and non-musical or environmentally sourced sound, to have healing properties and positive mental health impact, was a completely untapped psychological resource.

Joining Up

In the late 1990’s, Dr. Mari Swingle became a primary accomplice in the harmonic discovery process.

Working predominantly with behavioural and scholastic challenges of children, she applied various sound frequencies to scholastic tasking to target learning, focus, and memory enhancement. This included ADHD, learning disabilities, and slower cognitive function (and later age-related cognitive decline).

Along with Dr. Swingle Sr, she explored the layered and blended value of harmonic stimulants.

The Early 2000's

Mari noted a growing subset of clients seeking therapy for attention deficits and learning disorders who did not fit the traditional profile; they were neither inattentive nor hyperactive.

Looking at the brain revealed two features within this sub-set. First, she found the region(s) of the brain responsible for quieting was/were in a continuous state of hyperarousal; a state associated with anxiety, not inattention, and certainly not slow cognitive function.

No surprise then that all these clients had negative experience(s) with pharmaceutical intervention; not responding at all well to the traditional stimulants they had been prescribed for ADHD, common LD, and the like. They were also typically rather brilliant!

Mari, with her background in teaching and accelerated curriculum development, flipped the notion of using stimulating harmonics for attention on its head. Carefully monitoring localized EEG brain signatures, and individualized power, she layered interventions to also include calmants. Once again, the Swingle Clinic had a breakthrough.

Over Two Decades Later

Dr. Mari Swingle’s seminal studies on the effects of interactive technologies on the brain started to implicate not just symptom interference (e.g., exacerbation of anxiety, depression, insomnia, etc.) but brainwave (EEG signal) interference.

Dr. Mari Swingle was finding technological impact was no longer purely procedural, environmental, and biological, but that the delivery systems themselves were a major source of interference.

In her work, Dr. Mari Swingle exposed a competitive (as opposed to complementary) effect on sound reception. This became a growing challenge plaguing reliability and validity, affecting both the fidelity of wireless EEG recordings and what might be called mid layer non-auditory or ‘non-musical’ sound transmission…and brain processing!

Soon, her work began to be integrated into the research and development of a 3rd generation of products. But for this, higher levels of engineering knowledge were needed. A few years of intensive research later, Dr. Mari Swingle paired up with a design and engineering team from Italy, and SwingleSonic DeuroDelve was born!

The Results

The union took production to another level, targeting not just outcome influence on the EEG but specific access pathways; namely the central and autonomic nervous system(s).

The flagship APP BrainCalm Pro was released ahead of schedule at the Biofeedback Federation of Europe (BFE) conference in 2024. This was closely followed by target specific APPs for professionals only (tabbed Pro) and the general public (tabbed Flo). The first of which are SLEEP FLO and SLEEP PRO specifically targeting insomnia.

Now branded under SwingleSonic NeuroDelve and SonicDelve, our rigorously engineered products embrace technological progress, while remaining critically buffered from interference.

You have our promise that with every technological advancement, we systematically control for brain altering properties. The ones we want — and more importantly, the ones we don’t want!

All our products target the fundamental organization of individualised brain waves that govern the balance of arousal and calm — our personal states of wellbeing.
